1. Structure

Awning over a window or door Narrow projection off the wall. Shades glass and keeps rain off a doorway. Attached patio or verandah Roofed and attached to the house. The workhorse outdoor room. Open pergola Slatted or open top. Shade and structure, but not rain protection. Carport Needs 2.2m clearance minimum. Allow more for a 4WD or roof racks. Freestanding shelter (BBQ area) Detached, so it needs bracing both ways. Good over an outdoor kitchen. Gazebo or poolside shelter Freestanding sitting area. Choose a pyramid roof or a simple fall.

2. Roof form

Skillion (single fall) One plane falling to a chosen side. Simplest and cheapest. Pyramid / hip Falls to all four sides from a central apex. Classic gazebo look.

5. What is it standing on?

Concrete footings in soil or grass Dig, set a galvanised stirrup in wet concrete, bolt the post on. The usual method. Bolted to an existing concrete slab No digging. Base plate chemically anchored to the slab. Check the slab is thick enough and not just a path. Through pavers to a footing below Lift the pavers, dig and pour a footing, then cut the pavers back in around the post. Post concreted into the ground H5 treated post buried 600mm and concreted. Simple and strong, but the post is in the ground for life.

About this estimator

What roof pitch do I need?

It depends on the sheet. Corrugated Colorbond and polycarbonate need at least 5 degrees, Trimdek will go to 3, and insulated panel down to 2. Below the minimum, water backs up at the laps and the roof leaks. The estimator flags it if you go under.

How much clearance does a carport need?

Allow 2.2 metres as an absolute minimum to the underside of the beam, and more if you have a 4WD, roof racks or a van. Measure your actual vehicle. Beams are the thing people hit.

Do I need approval for a pergola or carport in NSW?

A small freestanding pergola behind the building line can sometimes be exempt development. Most attached structures and nearly all carports need a Complying Development Certificate, with setbacks from the boundary being the criterion that most often catches people out.

Attached or freestanding?

Attached is cheaper because the house carries one side, but the junction where the new roof meets the existing one has to be flashed properly or it will leak. Freestanding avoids that entirely and needs bracing in both directions instead.
