About this estimator
Is this accurate enough to order materials from?
It is a solid first take-off and plenty of DIY builders use it that way, but always check the final quantities against your actual set-out before ordering. Joist and bearer spans should be confirmed against AS 1684 span tables or an engineer for anything over a metre high.
Does it include the balustrade and stairs?
Balustrade is added automatically once the deck is a metre or more above ground, because that is when it becomes a code requirement. Stairs are added based on the height you select. Both are estimated per lineal metre and per step respectively.
Why does composite need closer joist spacing?
Composite boards are less stiff than hardwood, so they need support at 400mm centres rather than 450mm. That means more joists, which is why switching to composite increases the substructure cost as well as the board cost.
Can I give these numbers to a builder?
Yes, and that is partly the point. Bring the dimensions, the material and the take-off to a conversation and you will get a far more useful quote than starting from "how much for a deck". Call us on 0428 671 019 and we can talk through it.
